MEDICAL RECORDS, VIDEO UNDER REVIEW IN SILVA DEATH
05-21-2013 Kern County Sheriff's investigators are studying the medical records of a man who died after a struggle with deputies and CHP officers, hoping they help explain his behavior. The Bakersfield Californian reports deputies are also looking at security video from Kern Medical Center, which David Silva visited before the confrontation. Deputies later found Silva sleeping across the street from the hospital.
VIDAK LEADS STATE SENATE RACE
05-21-2013 Republican Andy Vidak is well ahead of the rest of the field in the special primary for the 16th District state Senate race, with over 50 percent of votes going his way. The Hanford cherry farmer says voters in the heavily Democratic district must have liked what he had to say. "I've always said, you know, common sense doesn't have party lines. And we need common sense in Sacramento and that's what our race was all about and it was a positive, positive message." Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez trailed with 42 percent of the vote. If Vidak ends up with a majority of the vote, there will be no runoff.
MISSING MAN FOUND DEAD, ROOMMATE ARRESTED
05-21-2013 An 18-year-old man has been arrested after Bakersfield police found his roommate's body hidden in a bedroom closet. Kelly Gill's niece, Sandy Martinez, says she knew something was wrong after Gill disappeared Sunday. "The whole time he was missing, I kept feeling like he was here in the house and I kept saying he's here, I feel him, I feel him. And everybody was making me feel like I was going crazy." Theron Ausbie was arrested at his home on Castro Lane Monday night on murder and robbery charges. An autopsy has been scheduled for later this week to determine how Gill died.
AIS CANCER CENTER OPEN FOR BUSINESS
05-21-2013 The new AIS Cancer Center at San Joaquin Community Hospital is now taking patients, after passing final inspections in April. At an official ribbon cutting on Tuesday, Medical Director Dr. Oscar Streeter Jr. said they'll use the latest clinical research and equipment to treat the earliest stage of breast cancer. "That means patients will be able to get their treatment in five days instead of the normal six weeks, and we only treat one quarter of the breast instead of the whole breast." Helping in that mission will be a new Quest Imaging center that's under construction next to the Cancer Center on Chester Avenue. It opens next year.
CHP: COUGHING FIT LED TO FATAL WRECK
05-21-2013 The driver who lost control of his big rig, crashing into the Beardsley Canal was having a coughing fit just before the wreck that killed his passenger. The CHP says the man, from Red Granite, Wisconsin lost control of the semi north of Olive drive, sending it through a guardrail and into the canal. The 35-year old passenger, who was from De Pere, Wisconsin died at the scene.
IN-CUSTODY DEATH INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
05-21-2013 The Kern County Sheriff's Office is continuing its investigation into the incident where a man died in custody after fighting with deputies and CHP officers, but they cannot predict when they will release their findings. They are still going over cell phone video that was taken shortly after Dan Silva was restrained and paramedics were responding.
