CRACKDOWN ON DUI'S TONIGHT
02-03-2012 Bakersfield Police will be looking for drunk and drugged drivers tonight in their latest sobriety checkpoint, although no time or location has been given. The enforcement is part of an ongoing campaign to encourage people to choose a designated driver before heading to a party. 452 Californians were arrested for DUI on Super Bowl Sunday last year, and two were killed in alcohol related crashes.
KEEPING WORKERS SAFE FROM PESTICIDE OVERSPRAY
02-03-2012 Kern County farmers and farmworkers are keeping up to date with the latest safety standards when it comes to pesticide. County Farm Bureau Executive Director Benjamin McFarland says the SpraySafe seminar has had a big impact on worker's health. "Since this program was created in 2005, there has been a 97 percent decrease in spray incidents in that time." McFarland says the application of pesticides can lead to health concerns in the field, but new mixing methods and equipment to spread the bug killers has made a lot of advances over the years. Communication between properties during spraying is also a key factor.
PASSENGERS ON GET BUS HOSPITALIZED
02-03-2012 The Bakersfield Fire Department says about 12 people complained of scratchy throats and difficulty breathing after pepper spray was released into the air on a GET Bus. Fire Cief Ross Kelly says they were called to the bus at the corner of Chester Avenue and 18th Street around 12:30 this afternoon. "We evaluated all of the patients. A total of eight were transported to local hospitals." Kelly says one of the people taken to the hospital was the bus driver. Golden Empire Transit officials and Bakersfield Police investigators will review on-board camera video to see what happened. No one was seriously hurt.

02-02-2012 A Delano man has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and trying to rape a girl. Police say 25-year-old Luis Alarcon took the girl to a place just outside the city and forcibly removed her clothes early Wednesday morning. She convinced him to stop, and he took her home. The girl's age has not been released. Investigators say she knew Alarcon.
NEW STUDENT TRACKING SYSTEM COMING TO KHSD
02-02-2012 Parents will soon be able to keep tabs on their kids' school lives like never before, thanks to a new online system being implemented by the Kern High School District. Information Systems and Technology Director Paul Helman says it will let parents track their children's attendance and their academic performance between report cards. "It's something that as a district we're very excited about. We think our community is going to be very excited to have this level of access and these new communication tools that are a part of this system." The system is expected to be fully up and running this fall.
A VICTORY FOR SCHOOL BUS RIDERS
02-02-2012 State lawmakers have passed legislation to stop an automatic funding cut affecting school transportation. The bill's sponsor, Shafter State Senator Michael Rubio, says the cut disproportionately affects people living in rural areas. "Folks who live in rural areas often rely solely on school bus transportation to get to and from school. It's not like an urban, downtown setting where you can walk to your local school site." It was one of many cuts triggered by a shortfall in state revenue. The bill now goes to Governor Brown's desk.
